What Is a Master Key System?

A master key system is a mechanical keying solution that allows different keys to open different locks, while master keys open multiple locks within the system. It's the professional way to manage building access without carrying dozens of keys or giving everyone access to everything.

Here's how it works: Your employee uses their key to open the front door and their office. Your department manager's key opens the front door, their office, and all offices in their department. Your master key opens everything. Same lock hardware, different levels of access—all controlled by how the lock cylinders are pinned.

For businesses throughout Greater Boston and the South Shore managing multiple employees, departments, or tenants, master key systems provide security and convenience. Maintenance staff can access mechanical rooms and common areas without accessing tenant spaces. Department managers can secure their area while still accessing shared spaces. And you maintain ultimate control with a master key that opens everything.

No electronics. No software. No batteries. Just precision mechanical engineering that's been securing commercial buildings for over a century.

Why Businesses Need Master Key Systems

01 Different keys for every door.

Your janitor carries 20 keys. Your manager carries 15 keys. Everyone spends time fumbling through key rings trying to find the right one. When someone loses keys, you don't know which doors are compromised.

02 Same key for every door.

Everyone with a key can access everywhere—the supply closet, the cash office, the server room, executive offices. Zero security. One lost key compromises your entire facility.

Master key systems solve both problems.

Hierarchical Access Control

Create different access levels for different roles. Entry-level employees access only common areas and their workspace. Supervisors access their entire department. Executives access all departments. Maintenance accesses utility areas. All using physical keys cut to specific pin combinations.

Selective Access

Your bookkeeper needs access to the accounting office but not the warehouse. Your warehouse manager needs warehouse access but not accounting. Each gets a key that works only for their authorized areas—plus common areas like entrances and restrooms.

Convenience for Managers

Instead of carrying separate keys for every door in your department, carry one key that opens all of them. Your operations manager's key opens all operational areas with a single key.

Audit Trail (When Lost)

When an employee loses their key, you know exactly which doors it opens because it's documented in your master key hierarchy. Rekey only the compromised locks, not the entire building.

Master Key System Hierarchy Explained

Understanding Your Key Levels

Professional master key systems use a hierarchical structure. Here's how it works from top to bottom:

Grand Master Key (Top Level)

WHO GETS IT: Building owner, property manager, or business owner only

WHAT IT OPENS: Every single lock in the system without exception

USE CASE: Ultimate control. Emergency access. You should have 1-2 grand master keys maximum, stored securely when not in use. This is your "master of masters.

Master Key (Second Level)

WHO GETS IT: Senior management, department heads, facilities managers

WHAT IT OPENS: All locks within a specific area or department, plus common areas

USE CASE: A retail store manager has a master key that opens all areas of their store—sales floor doors, stockrooms, offices, break rooms. But it won't open other stores in the chain (those have different masters under the same grand master).

EXAMPLE: In a multi-tenant office building, each tenant gets a master key that opens all spaces within their suite, but doesn't open other tenants' spaces.

Sub-Master Key (Third Level)

WHO GETS IT: Team leaders, shift supervisors, specialized staff

WHAT IT OPENS: Specific zones within a department, plus common areas

USE CASE: In a hospital, the nursing supervisor's sub-master opens all patient rooms on their floor, medication storage for that floor, and staff areas—but not other floors or administrative areas.

EXAMPLE: In a retail chain, the assistant manager's sub-master opens the sales floor, stockroom, and employee break room, but not the cash office or manager's office.

Change Key (Bottom Level)

WHO GETS IT: General employees, individual tenants, specific users

WHAT IT OPENS: Only their assigned space(s), plus building entrance

USE CASE: Standard employee access. Your accountant's key opens the front door and the accounting office, period. Can't access warehouse, can't access executive offices, can't access server room.

Common Area Keys

Some systems include keys that only open shared spaces—main entrances, restrooms, break rooms, parking garage—but no private offices or secured areas. Perfect for contractors, cleaning crews, or delivery personnel who need building access but shouldn't enter private spaces.

How Master Key Systems Work

The Mechanical Magic Behind the System

Master key systems work through precise pin tumbler configurations inside each lock cylinder. Here's the simple explanation:

Standard locks have one set of pins that align with one key. Master keyed locks have additional pins (called master wafers) that create multiple "shear lines"—points where the lock will turn. One shear line aligns with the change key. Another aligns with the master key. Same lock, multiple keys that work.

The locksmith designs your system by:

1. Determining Your Hierarchy: How many levels of access do you need? Who needs access to what?

2. Pinning Cylinders: Each lock is pinned with a specific combination that responds to multiple keys in your hierarchy. The change key, the sub-master (if applicable), the master, and the grand master.

3. Key Control: Cutting keys to match the pin configurations. Each key is stamped with an identification number (not your business name) for tracking.

4. Documentation: Creating a master key chart showing which keys open which locks. This stays with you in a secure location.

When properly designed, your master key system provides security through hierarchy while maintaining the convenience of mechanical keys.

No More Key Rings

Instead of carrying 15 keys, your manager carries one. Instead of fumbling through keys trying to find the right one, they use the same key for every door they're authorized to access.

Flexible Access Control

Need to give your new hire access to their office and common areas? Cut a change key. Promoting someone to department supervisor? Issue a sub-master. All without changing any locks.

Secure Sensitive Areas

Restrict access to cash offices, server rooms, executive areas, inventory storage, and other high-security zones. Only keys at the appropriate hierarchy level will work.

Cost-Effective Rekeying

When someone loses a change key, rekey only the locks that key opened—not the entire building. The master key system hierarchy remains intact. When you rekey, you're replacing pins in specific cylinders, not replacing all the hardware.

Works with Existing Hardware

In most cases, we can convert your existing locks to a master key system without replacing the hardware. We repin the cylinders to create the master key hierarchy.

No Power Required

Unlike electronic access control, master key systems work during power outages. No batteries to replace. No software to update. Simple, reliable, mechanical security.

Who Needs Master Key Systems

Businesses & Properties We Serve

Multi-Tenant Office Buildings

Give each tenant a master key for their suite. Building management keeps a grand master for all suites. Maintenance has keys for mechanical rooms and common areas only.

Retail Stores & Chains

Store managers get master keys for their location. District managers get grand masters for multiple stores. Employees get change keys for their specific role (sales floor vs. stockroom vs. cash office).

Corporate Offices

Executives access all departments. Department managers access their department plus common areas. Employees access their workspace plus shared spaces. IT staff accesses server rooms and network closets.

Educational Facilities

Administrators access all buildings. Department heads access their department facilities. Teachers access their classroom plus common areas. Custodial staff accesses all areas except offices.

Healthcare Facilities

Hospital administration accesses all areas. Department supervisors access their wing. Nursing staff accesses patient rooms on their floor. Maintenance accesses utility areas.

Property Management Companies

Master key systems across multiple properties. Each property has its own master system. Property managers carry masters for their assigned buildings. Maintenance carries sub-masters for common areas.

Which System Is Right for You?

Master Key Systems (Mechanical)

Best for: Small to medium businesses, traditional offices, properties where simplicity matters

Pros: No power required, works in outages, simple to use, lower upfront cost, no software

Cons: No entry logs, can't be changed remotely, lost keys require rekeying

Access Control Systems (Electronic)

Best for: Larger businesses, high-security facilities, properties needing audit trails

Pros: Detailed logs, remote management, instant user changes, no rekeying when credentials lost

Cons: Requires power/batteries, higher upfront cost, needs IT infrastructure

Many Businesses Use Both

Master key systems for basic access control (offices, common areas), electronic access control for high-security areas (server rooms, cash offices, executive suites). We design hybrid solutions that provide the right security for each area.
